Modern life is full of stress and high levels can have many undesirable consequences, including stress hair loss, anxiety disorders, depression, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease. There are several types of associated hair loss, including alopecia areata, a condition where intense stress causes white blood cells to attack hair follicles, and telogen effluvium, which causes hair follicles to go into a resting phase. Both can cause large amounts of hair to fall out, and are usually temporary, with hair growing back when stress is reduced.
Here are five tips to help combat stress hair loss.
1) Meditate.
Meditation can help you relax and reduce or minimize the pressures of life. Just ten to fifteen minutes a day can have a nearly profound effect.
2) Get plenty of sleep.
Ever notice that when you're tired you are more likely to be cranky and easily annoyed by minor things in life? Well rested people tend to be more relaxed. The amount of sleep required to be well rested varies from person to person, but seven to eight hours a day works well for most people.
3) Reduce or eliminate caffeine.
This includes not only caffeine in coffee and tea, but from other sources such as soft drinks and medication. This can hard to do as many people are addicted to caffeine, whether it's a cup of coffee to get going in the morning, or high caffeine sodas all day, but it's usually easy to at least moderate caffeine intake.
4) Exercise regularly.
Research and practical experience suggests those who exercise are less affected by stress. Even going from sedentary to just walking a few minutes a day can have a significant effect. You don't need to start running marathons to see effects!
5) Minimize alcohol intake.
While drinking alcohol can have short-term benefits, excessive drinking can simply lead to more problems and tension when sober.
Stress can have many undesirable side effects, including stress hair loss, depression, and other medical problems. These five tips can help you relax and minimize problems in your life.
